Dance Alabama! A Show, an Organization, and an Opportunity

This November, UA Theatre & Dance presents a season favorite, Dance Alabama! The show, created by the student organization of the same name, is always unique, featuring brand new student-choreographed works. This semester’s production will include over 20 pieces, including a women’s jazz piece about transition. For his piece “In Transit,” senior Rex Glover says he drew inspiration from people walking daily on the busy streets of New York City.

“As a student organization, Dance Alabama is for anyone who lives, breathes, and shares the love of dance. You do not have to be a dance major to be a part of it,” says Glover. He has been involved with the organization throughout his four years at UA, and this is the second time he has been a part of the production. In addition to the show, Dance Alabama will present a film festival this year, a collaborative opportunity for filmmakers, visual artists, musicians, choreographers and dancers. This is just one example of the organization’s outreach efforts keeping members busy, in addition to developing their choreography.

To have a piece selected to represent the organization, choreographers present their work at showings for the dance faculty and other members of Dance Alabama to gather feedback. After several showings, the faculty will make cuts and the remaining choreographers move closer to having their piece selected. According to Glover, “When the story actually comes to life and the dancers give me exactly what I have pictured, there is nothing more fulfilling and fascinating to. As choreographing is my ultimate goal, Dance Alabama! is a fantastic stepping-stone to that!”
