Molière’s Tartuffe
Tuscaloosa, AL – UA Theatre and Dance presents Tartuffe by Molière on Tuesday, September 29 through Saturday, October 3 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, October 4 at 2:00 p.m. in the Marian Gallaway Theatre at Rowand-Johnson Hall, located at 348 Stadium Drive.
Tartuffe is Molière’s quintessential comedy about a mother and son, Madame Pernelle and Orgon, blinded by devotion to Tartuffe, a hypocritically pious con-artist. Hilarity ensues when family and friends join forces to expose the imposter and restore Orgon’s house to order.
This show is a unique opportunity for actors to work on a different type of rhyming verse compared to the better known Shakespearean style according to director and Professor of Acting Seth Panitch. On top of the difficult language, he says actors learn to “balance the needs of honest connection with the demands of constantly rhyming in verse.” This is not the only balancing act incorporated into the show. The concurrence of comedy and tragedy throughout the entire show, will keep audiences engaged and entertained. Set in a dreamlike “grotesque world” the cast and crew have been able to recreate this realistic play in nonrealistic ways.

About Seth Panitch
Seth is a Professor of Acting and heads the MFA and Undergraduate Acting programs at The University of Alabama. A professional Director, Actor, Playwright and Screenwriter, Seth has worked internationally in Havana, Cuba with the Ministry of Culture. Seth was awarded the University of Alabama’s Burnum Distinguished Faculty Award in 2014, the Alabama National Alumni Association’s “Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Award” in 2010, and was named the 2010 Druid Arts Educator of the Year. He was also awarded a Leadership Board Faculty Fellowship from 2009-2012. Seth received his MFA in Acting at the University of Washington’s Professional Actor’s Training Program and is a member of both the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers and the Dramatists Guild of America.
