42nd Street Press Release

UA Theatre & Dance closes its season with the “Lullaby of Broadway”

UA Theatre & Dance will bring Broadway to ‘Bama during its production of 42nd Street April 14-19. Complete with big, flashy tap dances, gorgeous costumes and a cast of 40, this musical is sure to dazzle audience members this spring.

“I am both thrilled and terrified about tackling a musical of this magnitude,” says Director Stacy Alley, who directed Urinetown last season and choreographed Show Boat two years ago. The 42nd Street cast and crew of nearly 70 faculty and students will tour to Mobile for a special one-night only performance before returning to the Marian Gallaway Theatre to the close the UA Theatre & Dance season.

The musical follows Peggy Sawyer, a small town girl who journeys to Broadway to fulfill her dreams. The audience will journey behind the scenes as Peggy moves from chorus girl to leading lady. Set during the Great Depression, 42nd Street received Tony Awards for Best Musical after its premier in 1980 and Best Revival in 2001. The musical includes songs like “Lullaby of Broadway,” “We’re in the Money” and the title song, “Forty-Second Street.”

Alley says, “You’ll still see ‘those dancing feet’ but with my own interpretation and choreography as influenced by the work of original choreographer and director, Gower Champion.” She is confident this will be a fresh take that stays true to the time period.

Join UA Theatre & Dance for a performance of classical musical theatre at the Marian Gallaway Theatre in Rowand-Johnson Hall on April 14-19. To purchase tickets for 42nd Street, visit http://ua.tix.com/ or call the box office at 205.348.3400.
