Shaw’s Marriage Comedy Takes the Stage at UA

George Bernard Shaw often wrote about the problems he saw with the social constructions of his time, and nearly all of his plays explore social issues he wished to engage through drama. His characters are caught in restraints created by their class privilege, education, religion, health care and government — serious issues that Shaw spins in a comedic light — and the characters in “Misalliance,” which opens Monday at the Marian Gallaway Theatre on the University of Alabama campus, are no different.

“Shaw himself subtitled this play ‘A Debate in One Sitting,’ and I think that’s a fairly accurate representation of the piece as a whole,” said Amber Gibson, a senior at UA and a member of the cast. “It’s absolutely a comedy, with a decent amount of levity, however, Shaw does tackle a few serious topics.”
