Alabama Theatre Department Takes Talent to the Coast

The inaugural year of the University of Alabama’s SummerTide Theatre turned into a serious vacation for me, the first five weeks I’d had off work since I was a teenager. Sure, we put on a professional piece of musical theater six nights a week, with a handful of daytime performances. And yes, we conducted three-week long theater camp workshops and sat down for occasional interviews with the press.

But that’s not work. That’s 90 minutes playing and singing for audiences who ate up some professional-level show time, and a few hours sharing craft with Gulf Shores kids eager to learn music, dancing, acting, writing and more. The rest of the time? Hey, you’re at the most beautiful beaches in the world. Swimming. Fried shrimp. Sunburned skin.
