Check-In: 9 AM

Auditionees must register by emailing their name, address and phone number to Nancy Calvert by the listed deadlines. Students who audition for the program will also receive two complimentary tickets to the Alabama Repertory Dance Theatre concert. When registering, please indicate if you would like to receive your two complimentary tickets to the performance that evening at 5:30 PM. You may purchase additional tickets by contacting the Box Office at (205) 348-3400 or visiting Auditions start promptly at 10 AM and will conclude around 1 PM. Prospective students are encouraged to arrive no later than 9 AM to complete their check-in and have time to warm-up.

Auditionees are required to submit an essay along with their registration. In a 1-page, 12-point font essay, please detail why you are interested in studying dance at the University of Alabama. Include a brief description of your past training in movement forms and artistic practices, what your goals as a dancer are, and what you are interested in studying as a dance artist (teaching, choreography, therapy, photography, etc.). Please email your essay to Rita Snyder by the registration deadline. You may contact Rita Snyder if you have further questions about the audition.

What to Expect

Because of the many applicants and limitations in faculty and space, the Dance program cannot accept all eligible applicants. Therefore, acceptance to the program is selective. Acceptance will be given to those applicants whose potential indicates the greatest likelihood of success within the program.

On the day of the audition, the applicant can expect the following:

  • Dancers will have from 9-9:45 AM to warm themselves up before the audition class begins.
  • There will be a brief introductory meeting with UA Dance faculty and all students and parents/guardians.
  • The audition portion will include a variety of phrases and exercises in ballet, contemporary, and improvisation. An opportunity to demonstrate pointe work will be available but is not required.
  • There will be an opportunity for auditionees to ask the faculty and current students any questions that they may have.
  • Auditionees are encouraged to make their own arrangements to tour the facilities and campus during their visit.
  • Observers are not permitted during the actual audition classes.

What to Wear

Please have a clean and neat, professional look. Hair should be neatly secured. Do not wear jewelry. For women, we suggest a black or other dark, solid color leotard with either black or pink tights. Convertible tights are best so you can easily be barefoot for the contemporary portion of the audition. Bring ballet slippers and, if applicable, pointe shoes. For men, wear either a black or white, fitted T-shirt and black tights with black or white ballet slippers.
