What to Expect
Because of the many applicants and limitations in faculty and space, the Dance program cannot accept all eligible applicants. Therefore, acceptance to the program is selective. A student’s educational objective, quality of academic record and successful audition will be considered. Acceptance will be given to those applicants whose potential indicates the greatest likelihood of success within the program.
On the day of the audition, the applicant can expect the following:
• There will be a brief introductory meeting with UA Dance faculty and all students and parents/guardians.
• Prospective students will participate in abbreviated classes in ballet, contemporary and jazz, as well as an improvisational exercise.
• There will be an opportunity for auditionees to ask the faculty and current students any questions that they may have and tour the facility and campus.
• Observers are NOT permitted during the actual audition classes.
What to Wear
Bring ballet, pointe and jazz shoes and wear a black leotard and pink tights (convertible are best so you can easily be barefoot for the modern portion). Hair should be neatly secured in a bun. Do not wear jewelry.
Wear either a black or white fitted T-shirt and black tights with black or white ballet slippers (bring jazz shoes).
Video auditions are not recommended, however, video auditions are accepted under special circumstances.
Video auditions should include the following:
•4-5 minutes of ballet barre exercises that demonstrate placement/alignment, line, actions of feet, legs and arms in quick movements (dégagé, frappé, etc.) and slow movements (rond de jambe, fondu, etc.)
•3-5 minutes of center exercises that demonstrate balance, extension, épaulement, line and musicality, pirouettes (double pirouette en de hors), quick jumps (petit jeté, pas de chat, etc.), big jumps (grand jeté, tour jeté, etc.)
•Pointe work (not required) demonstrating echappé on point, piqué turns and single pirouette
•1-2 minutes of a contemporary combination/choreography (modern dance, concert jazz, or contemporary ballet) that demonstrates your strengths as a dancer
Video submissions are due by Friday, February 23, 2018. Please send a link to youtube or vimeo via email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
