MFA in Directing…

“Flora, The Red Menace”, 2011

The Directing program at Alabama is a small and intense 3-year program with a focus on production for the entire residency.  Course work includes a directing studio every semester in which directing candidates explore a variety of genres and problems commonly encountered by directors professionally and within academia.  Additional courses are taken in the areas of design, performance, history and criticism.  While some courses are required for the degree, students have many electives to choose from, allowing them to focus on areas of interest to supplement their directing work. The course of study is individualized and is planned with the program director, whose consent is necessary for approval.

Candidates in the directing program meet regularly with the program director for instruction, rehearsal techniques, and analysis/criticism of directing projects on both the Mainstage and in the Studio Theatre, which serves as the directors’ primary lab throughout the three years of study.

First year candidates normally serve as Assistant Directors.  Second year and third year students direct two full-length productions each academic year.  The exceptional student may be invited to direct on the Mainstage.

Degree Requirements/Curriculum:  A total of 60 semester hours is required for the Master of Fine Arts Degree.  Students will fill those hours with a variety of course requirements (courses and curriculum subject to change). A sample of the curriculum may be found here.

Graduate Assistantships:  Degree candidates in this program may be awarded assistantships that provide full tuition and a stipend of $1334.00 per month before taxes. Please note that graduate assistantships are not available during semester-long or academic-year length internships.  Department course fees are still the responsibility of students.

Interview Sites: Interviews for admittance in Fall 2014 will be held in New York City, NY January 24–25; Chicago at the The Westin, Michigan Avenue, January 30–February 2, 2014; Mobile, AL at the SETC convention March 5–9, 2014. You may also interview on campus at any time by appointment. For more information, please contact Jeffrey Tangeman, Head of MFA Directing  jptangeman@as.ua.edu.
